Spring Break 2002

Since I had never been on a spring break during my college career, I put my foot down this year and insisted on going somewhere. Originally I wanted to go to Germany with Daniel because airfare to Europe was dirt cheap. However, the actual vacation was still a little pricey for college students with only a few months in which to plan and save. So thanks to ShaLo and her parents' time-share in Orlando, we (ShaLo, me, Daniel, Lecia, Patrick, and Shank) went to Disney World for a week.

Patrick and me looking cool!
Day One:
We headed off to Orlando early Saturday morning. Considering it was SPRING break, you'd think it was warm, but oh no. Patrick and I were bundled up in our coats, Clemson blanket, and ultra-cool ski caps.
Timeshares are the only way to go!
Thanks to Shanelle's parents, we had an awesome place to stay: Orange Lake Country Club and Resort. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Lord. The place was really nice, and we all saved a ton of money.
Congratulations to the happy couple!

Day Two:
Sunday we (minus Lecia) went to the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue. I told Claire (right) Shanelle and Patrick had just become engaged, so they had to get up and dance in front of everyone.

"He's been shot!...right in the foot!"
Then Daniel was chosen to be in the show as the Indian Scout. He did a great job, brought down the house, and was even recognized the next day.
Kamala, Daniel, Shank, Wayne, Patrick, and Shanelle
We had the absolute best waiter there, Wayne. He kept our plates filled and the drinks coming. Nothing like getting a great show, wonderful food, tip, and open bar for $48!
It was quite a hassle to get this picture just right
Day Three:
We went to Universal Studios on Monday and had a great time. A highlight was Daniel and Shank getting wet on the Jaws ride (serves them right for suggesting a water ride in 55 degee weather).
Pretty Women, walkin' down the street
As females, it is required that we love Pretty Woman. I'm not sure why that is, I guess it's inate. Shanelle, Lecia and I stopped to pose in front of the Hotel (Regent) Beverly Wilshire, which is in the movie.
Fred and his sidekick
Just one of many jokes made at Daniel's expense. He drives a 1987 Toyota Tercel hatchback, which is way too small for his long body. He looks like this when driving, and I'm not sure it'll be too long before he has to start driving Flintstone-style (i.e. with his feet). His car already has 320,000 miles on it.
Me, Jeannie and Pooh

Day Four:
Shank, Daniel and I went to Magic Kingdom on Tuesday so that I could meet up with my family. I met my brother Chet and his family for Breakfast with Pooh. Jeannie was excited to get a picture with Pooh (and so was I).

Most of the Hirsch children (and grandchildren)
I met everyone else a little later in Frontierland. From left: Natalie (in stroller), Molly, Chet, Jeannie, me, Chan Sr., Chan Jr., Kelly, and Chase.
I'm never riding Splash Mountain again
Daniel, Shank, and I went on Splash Mountain and ended up getting stuck on the main drop's incline for half an hour. Turns out we were in a defective log which kept messing up the sensors. I was glad to be alive after being trapped wet and cold on an encased hill in a broken log.
Typical Magic Kingdom touristy picture
Here's just one of those stereotypical Disney World pictures everyone has somewhere. Cinderella's castle makes for an awesome backdrop.
I've never experienced the Mad Hatter's Tea Party quite like this before
The teacups are definitely made with children in mind. Daniel being 6'4" made riding this classic a whole new experience. Turning the center wheel was a little more difficult with his legs hanging over it.
Mickey is the Ladies' Mouse
While Shank, Daniel and I were at the Magic Kingdom, Shanelle, Patrick and Lecia went to MGM Studios. I'm so jealous because they managed to get a picture with Mickey, and I have tried to get a picture with him the past three times I've been to Disney World. Four times a charm right?
I wish Pleasure Island was in DC
Even though we had all had a LONG day, we all went to Pleasure Island to have a little fun. Now that we are all 21, we didn't take advantage of PI like we should have. Those cups are full of water.
Don't mess with a 100 ft. tall dog named Goofy
Disney World's entrance has enormous characters across it. If you look closely, Lecia is by Goofy's left foot. Never realized how big those characters were until I took this picture.
Daniel is such a ham in front of the camera
Day Five:
We went to Island of Adventure, which was much more our speed, compared to Universal Studios. We especially loved the Incredible Hulk ride, Spiderman, and Daniel loved Jurassic Park and all the dinosaurs.
Much better than your typical carosel
In Dr. Suess Land we all rode the Suessocel. The horses were all different Suess characters, which made it look so much neater than a regular carosel.
Patrick's Angels kicking ass in Orlando
Day Six:
On Thursday Shank and Daniel decided to stay home and relax. Meanwhile, Patrick, Lecia, Shanelle and I went to more Disney parks. First stop was Animal Kingdom, which was lots of fun, but only has enough stuff to keep us entertained for about 2 hours.
Epcot has gotten much better the past few years
Then it was off to Epcot. My favorite part of Epcot was the Making of Me video. If you haven't seen it, next time you go to Epcot, you've gotta see it. It's Martin Short explaining how babies are made with a very funny cartoon of sperms racing toward a dolled-up egg who is wearing a target apron.
I'm so dopey, Lecia is just plain goofy, and Patrick is mad!
Trying on hats is always a fun experience. Shanelle thought this was a hilarious picture of me because of my expression. What? I'm just getting into character. I'm not Dopey for nothing.
Ein, zwei, drei...ein, zwei, drei...
I met up with Chet and Jeannie for dinner at the Disney Boardwalk, and Shanelle, Lecia, and Patrick had an authentic German meal. During the show, the band asked for people to come dance the waltz. Shanelle and Lecia were the only ones to take them up on the offer.
Here's Daniel and I with our work
Day Seven:
Shanelle, Patrick and Lecia spent the day at Magic Kingdom. Shank, Daniel and I spent it laying out by the pool. Then after getting a nice burn, Daniel and I went to the Disney Marketplace, which has of all things Lego Land. So Daniel and I made Lego versions of Mickey and Minnie.
Check out that detail
Close-up of Mickey and Minnie. Daniel and I were the most popular kids in Lego Land. By the time we were finishing up, a crowd had gathered around us, and kids were asking how we had made Mickey and Minnie. "With Legos, duh."

Day Eight:
Finally had to pack up and head home. The vacation flew by, but we made every minute count, and got to do everything we wanted to. We stopped by the Disney Marketplace one last time to pick up a few things and have breakfast before heading out. Can you believe McDonald's denied us breakfast at 10:20a.m.? Oh well, Ears to you, 2002!
